Partnership Overview
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Program in Oncology within the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC) received the prestigious National Cancer Institute U56 Cooperative Planning Grant for a Comprehensive Minority Institution/Cancer Center Partnership in the fall of 2003. The overall mission of the Partnership is to address the disparities in cancer morbidity and mortality in Maryland’s minority populations on the Eastern Shore and in Baltimore City through cancer research and outreach. The long-term goals of this partnership are to:- Create a stable, long-term, and collaborative relationship of mutual benefit between UMES and UMSOM in cancer research and cancer disparities research;
- Improve the effectiveness and breadth of UMES and UMSOM research activities designed to benefit the minority populations in Maryland’s underserved areas;
- Build and stabilize the independent, competitive cancer research capacity, cancer research training and career development programs at UMES; and
- Evaluate Partnership intervention activities and assess the overall effectiveness of the Partnership in each institution.
